Deck Railing Installation FAQs

Frequently asked questions about our deck railing installation service

It is a national requirement that all decks higher than 30” above the ground have a guardrail. If your deck is below 30” from the ground, you must still follow building code requirements.

Besides the national deck railing rule, here are Washington’s code requirements:

  • Deck railings must support 200 pounds of lateral pressure.
  • Guardrail supports must be fastened with galvanized (weather-resistant) bolts through the deck framing.
  • The guardrail must be at least 36” for residential homes and 42” for commercial properties.

You don’t need a permit to install or build your deck railings. But, if you are building the deck and the railings you will need a permit.
